The Weight of Softness

“The Weight of Softness” presents an overfilled textile figure suspended by the neck above a Turkish rug. Its soft body hangs under its own weight, held upright while gravity pulls its form downward.

The figure is deliberately swollen and uneven. As the filling pushes against the textile surface, the body expands beyond a stable human shape. Its softness allows it to stretch and distort under the pressure of what it contains.

Red yarn extends from the lower body towards the rug beneath it, physically connecting the suspended figure to the floor. Although the body is lifted away from the domestic surface, the thread maintains a connection between the two.

The textile surface carries the marks of its construction and repeated stitching. Seams, tension, and changes in shape remain visible, making the labour of producing and containing the figure part of its appearance.

“The Weight of Softness” uses the physical properties of soft materials to hold a body under tension. Suspension, filling, thread, and gravity work against one another, allowing softness to carry pressure, restraint, and weight.
