“Artificial Intimacies” begins with a lace pattern inherited from Batur’s grandmother. Using a 3D pen and recycled plastic, Batur retraces the pattern by hand, following a form originally made through thread and textile techniques.
The process retains the repetitive labour of following and building a pattern, while changing the material through which it is made. Plastic replaces thread, producing a surface that is more rigid and resistant. A form associated with softness, touch, and domestic use becomes fixed in a material that behaves differently against the body.
The finished pieces are displayed inside transparent cases. Removed from use and protected from direct contact, they can be closely viewed but no longer handled in the way lace ordinarily might be.
“Artificial Intimacies” follows what happens to an inherited form as it passes through a different material and method of making. The pattern remains recognisable, while its texture, function, and relationship to touch are changed in the process.
